Taking the lead in the fast-growing feline healthcare landscape.

The event kicked off with a powerful call to action from MSD Animal Health Philippines General Manager Dr. Alan Piedad, who addressed the rapid growth of the country’s cat population and the increasing burden of feline diseases. He emphasized the urgent need for veterinarians to stay ahead of emerging health challenges as the Philippine feline population continues to grow.

This was further reinforced by MSD Animal Health Philippines Technical Manager – Companion Animal Business Unit Dr. Flori Ann Buiser, who noted that the Philippines is now home to over 8 million cats, both pets and strays—highlighting the scale and urgency of comprehensive feline healthcare. She reaffirmed MSD Animal Health’s commitment to creating healthier, safer, and happier cats nationwide.

Asked about the inspiration behind the creation of the symposium, Dr. Leilani Acero, Business Unit Manager – Companion Animal at MSD Animal Health Philippines revealed, “There is an increasing demand for feline experts due to the gaining popularity of cat ownership. Since the Philippine market is predominantly dog-focused, most veterinarians concentrate on canine diseases and management.”

In addressing the current gaps in feline medicine, Dr. Buiser disclosed, “Last year, we launched the first-ever feline health symposium in the country because we want to create a dedicated platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration among experts. “Purrfect Science” bridges these gaps by introducing evidence-based practices, sharing local and global insights, and highlighting the unique physiological and behavioral needs of cats. This initiative empowers veterinarians to elevate their approach to feline care and ensures that cats receive the same level of attention and expertise as other species.”

On the question of the long-term effect of the event, Dr. Acero confidently answered, “With this event, MSD will be able to provide a platform for local experts to share their expertise, tips and experiences in managing diseases and caring for cat patients and provide vets an idea of the local prevalence of diseases discussed. We will also add topics that would not only improve their technical skills but also their business acumen, professional branding and mental well-being.”

“We envision “Purrfect Science” as the catalyst for a long-term transformation in feline healthcare standards. By equipping veterinarians with advanced knowledge and practical skills, the symposium sets the foundation for better diagnostics, preventive care, and treatment outcomes. Beyond the event, the relationships and networks formed will foster continuous learning and collaboration, ensuring that feline health is no longer overlooked but prioritized.” added Dr. Buiser.

The set of keynote speeches started with Dr. Keeno Ian Moralde, a Veterinary Partner at Whimsy Pet Care and proud rescuer of a stray cat. His talk, Purr-fect Clinics for Better Feline Care, equipped veterinarians with strategies in managing feline behavior in clinical settings— emphasizing pre-visit questionnaires and appropriate patient handling.

From there, Dr. Rio Dela Cruz, an Assistant Professor, Department of Veterinary Clinic Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine in UPLB, discussed the Cat Friendly Veterinarian Certification and the critical role of environmental modification in reducing feline stress. She highlighted the value of compassionate handling techniques and strong client communication—both key pillars of excellent feline care.

Following this, Dr. Adrian Ybañez, a Cebu-based Small Animal Researcher and Internist, presented a deep dive on FeLV and FIV Status G Impact on the Feline Practice in the Philippines, noting that many cat owners remain unaware of these infectious threats. He underscored the global significance of these diseases and reminded veterinarians that protection begins with just two vaccine doses, along with careful assessment of risk factors.

Dr. Matthew Benedict Calibo, a Veterinary Surgeon and Practitioner, took the stage next to deliver The Purr-suit of Balance: Tackling Cat Diabetes, covering the early signs and the pivotal role of Caninsulin®, the first FDA-approved insulin for pets, which remains a cornerstone treatment for managing feline diabetes.

Shifting perspectives from medical to branding, Tom Eugenio, a marketing expert and UP Diliman educator, presented Getting Started and Getting Ahead (The ROI of Branding). His talk empowered veterinarians to build strong brand identities, integrate AI solutions into daily practice, and strengthen client trust—reminding participants that happy pet parents lead to happier, healthier pets.

“MSD Animal Health Companion Animal Business Unit is happy and thrilled to spearhead, “Purrfect Science: The Feline Health Symposium Year 2”. It is more than an event—it’s an initiative that inspires veterinarians to adopt best practice and elevate the standard of feline care nationwide. Our excitement stems from knowing that this effort will have lasting impact on the well- being of cats and the confidence of veterinarians.” Dr. Buiser added towards the end of the event.

The success of the 2nd Annual Purrfect Science Symposium underscores one resounding message: MSD Animal Health continues to lead and shape feline health in the Philippines. Through science-backed products, research, and continuous veterinary education, MSD reaffirms its mission to elevate feline healthcare and empower veterinarians across the nation.

In a heartfelt closing remark, Dr. Buiser said, “Veterinarians can expect ongoing support in the form of training, digital resources, and collaborative initiatives that promote best practices in diagnostics, preventive care, and treatment. Our goal is to build a strong community of feline- focused professionals who share knowledge and elevate standards together. In the coming years, MSD Animal Health will continue to introduce cutting-edge solutions, organize specialized events, and strengthen partnerships—all aimed at ensuring that cats receive the highest level of care and that veterinarians are equipped to lead this transformation.”

“MSD will continue to support the veterinarians by providing learning opportunities such as the Feline Symposium. MSD will also launch innovative products and ensure they are accessible to patients.” concluded Dr. Acero.

With the Purrfect Science Symposium growing bigger each year, MSD Animal Health remains strong at the forefront—shaping the future of feline health, one scientific breakthrough at a time.
